The First Four Barents Cultural Scholarships Awarded
In the meeting of Barents Euro-Arctic Council on 19th October 2017 in Arkhangelsk, the Foreign Ministers of Barents Euro-Arctic Cooperation Area handed out the first ever Barents Cultural Scholarships.
The scholarships went to:
Photographer Jaakko Heikkilä from Finland
Poet and writer Mona Mörtlund from Sweden
Travelling theatre Samovarteateret from Norway
Fund for Support and Development of Ethno-Cultural Initiatives (Republic of Karelia) from Russia
Barents Cultural Scholarship
The Barents Cultural Scholarship launched in 2017 will be awarded on a bi-annual basis in the future. Four scholarships, each amounting 10 000 euros, will be awarded at the same time, one to each of the member countries of Barents Euro-Arctic cooperation (Finland, Sweden, Norway and Russia).
The purpose of the scholarship is to bring up the cultural activities, artists and ultural cooperation in the Barents region ad to encourage the cultural actors to work in the Barents region.
Joint Working Group on Culture JWGC
The role of Barents Joint Working Group on Culture JWGT in launching the cultural scholarship, defining the criteria and selecting the winners has been essential. The working group has members from both national and regional level within the Barents region.
The Joint Working Group on Culture is working on a co-chair basis. On the two-year period ended at the Arkhangelsk meetings the national chairperson was Alina Ivaschenko from the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and the regional chairperson Helena Aaltonen from Kainuu, Finland. The freshly nominated chairpersons for the next two years are David Ek from the Ministry of Culture of Sweden and Stine Jensen from Finnmark, Norway.
