Sotkamo in Kainuu Named as Tourist Area of the year in Finland
Association of Finnish Travel Industry (SMAL), Visit Finland and Travel Research Company TAK Oy have in 2019 compared the Finnish tourist areas for the second time. Sotkamo, located in Kainuu region, was chosen as the tourist destination of the year in Finland. The award was published at the MATKA Nordic Travel Fair on 16th January 2020.
The regions were ranked according to the following criteria:
1) Changes in the number of guests arriving at registered accommodation establishments
2) Development of tourist overnight stays
3) Even distribution of overnight stays by leisure travelers (low seasonal variation)
4) Accommodation sales per capita.
The comparison includes municipalities, sub-regions and regions, where accommodation statistics are available throughout the year. A total of 103 areas were included in the comparison. None of the areas were the best in light of all the measures, and the best-performing areas were not at the very top of any of the areas measured.
Sotkamo was chosen as the tourist destination of the year in Finland. Rovaniemi in Lapland came second and Vantaa in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area third. In the comparison, Sotkamo received 85 points out of 100. Rovaniemi achieved 79 points and Vantaa 78 points.
The tourist destination of the year in Finland is selected annually. The purpose of the reward is to draw attention to those issues which should be in the focus as developing the tourist areas.
