In 2017, the annual Kainuu gala event will be a part of Finland's centenary of independence festivities and arranged at Kuhmo Arts Centre. The event is open to all and free of charge, with coffee served at 14.00 and the official celebration beginning at 15.00.
The annual regional gala of Kainuu, open to all and free of charge, has been arranged since 1998. Traditionally, the festivities take place on the official day of the provincial flower Calluna vulgaris on 14th August. The celebration alternates from one Kainuu municipality to another and is arranged in cooperation with the Regional Council of Kainuu and the municipality or town in turn.
The party wishes to highlight the diverse cultural backgrounds of Kainuu. During the past years, the main speakers at the event have been from various fields; either political, cultural or church representatives. One important part of the celebration is also the awarding of Pro Kainuu prizes.
In 2017, the celebration will be a part of Finland's centenary of independence festivities and also exceptionally be held already on Sunday the 13th August. The location is at Kuhmo Arts Centre, with coffee served at 14.00 and the official celebration beginning at 15.00.
This year, the speech is given by State Secretary Paula Lehtomäki, who is also the chair of the official Centenary Board. The series of concerts “Sadan vuoden soitto”, freely translated as “Music from 100 Years” arranged in cooperation between various choirs, is launched at the event.
Kuhmo is an active player in cross-border co-operation and some invitations to the event have this year been sent also to the neighbouring region in Russia, the Republic of Karelia.
